Aubeterre Sur Dronne - medieval hillside village (15 mins drive,) one of the Beaux Villages of France. Beautiful tree lined square with restaurants and cafes dotted around it and the monolithic underground church carved out of rock is well worth a visit.

Brantome (40 mins) - nicknamed the Venice of Perigord is a great place to visit. There is a Benedictine Abbey, excellent restaurants and bars with a beautiful river running through it. There are boat trips where you can see more of the riverside and nearby Grottes (underground caves) to explore.

Bourdeilles (30 mins) - not far from Brantome, has a fabulous chateau (pictured) to visit and is a very picturesque riverside village.

Perigueux (45 mins) is famous for its cathedral, medieval streets with half timbered houses and Roman ruins. Good array of shops and a fantastic food market on a Wednesday and Saturday.

Bergerac (1hr) has a charming old town with narrow cobbled streets and timbered buildings. Good shopping. Boat trips available down the Dordogne on old "gabarres" - flat bottomed boats.

St Emilion (1hr 10 mins), Cognac (1hr 15 mins) and Bordeauz (1hr 30 mins) are all famous for their wines and spirits and beautiful towns to visit.

Futuroscope at Poitiers (2hrs) is worth a visit for older children with it's brilliant exposition of 3D max cinematography and many rides and scary simulators.
